Squirrel - rodent of the family Sciuridae. Many are bushy-tailed tree-dwellers, but some are ground dwellers. The red squirrel - Sciurus vulgaris is found throughout Europe and N Asia. About 23cm/9in long (plus 18cm/7in tail), the fur is red and the tail is bushy. It rears its young in stick nests or 'dreys'. Although it is less active in winter, it does not
hibernate, burying nuts as a winter store. In Britain the red squirrel has been replaced in most areas by the introduced grey squirrel - Sciurus carolinensis from N America. Other squirrels include ground squirrels or gophers which make networks of tunnels in more open ground and carry their food in cheek pouches, and the prairie dogs and marmots; also a number of genera of flying squirrels, mostly Asian, but some in E Europe and N America, which can glide between trees on skin stretched between front and back limbs.
